Network Instruments' nTAPs Exceed 67,000 Ports Shipped

Network Instruments, a provider of performance monitoring and network access solutions (network TAPs or nTAPs), announced that it has shipped its 67,000th port for network access and monitoring. The company achieved this significant milestone by recording strong year-over-year revenue growth of 20 percent in 2010.

“Organizations have always had the option to use SPAN/port mirroring or TAPs as a means for accessing packet streams for monitoring and analysis,” said Jim Frey, research director of Enterprise Management Associates (EMA (News - Alert)), in a statement. “But TAPs are emerging as the superior option, especially in areas where network traffic is growing the fastest, such as the many data centers upgrading to 10 Gbps cores.”

The growth in network TAPs happens due to the fact that TAPs prevent the packet loss that can occur with SPAN under high volumes of traffic across multiple interfaces and full-duplex links.

The scarcity of SPAN ports on 10 Gb switches has accelerated the demand for nTAPs as a reliable way to guarantee access to traffic in high-capacity environments. This demand was particularly strong with the federal government, as well as organizations involved in financial services, banking, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense, according to company officials.

“2010 was an outstanding year in terms of the growth that we achieved and our continued ability to meet customer needs through innovative and aggressively priced solutions,” said Pete Hage, sales director of nTAPs for Network Instruments (News - Alert). “A great example is our line of optical-in, copper-out nTAPs which allows existing copper-based monitoring solutions to interface with new optical networks.”

In January 2010, Network Instruments announced that its Observer performance monitoring platform delivers new reporting and performance tracking features designed to address service delivery and visibility challenges caused by cloud-based and multi-tiered applications.
