EdgeCast Joins the OpenDNS Bandwagon with Google and Others to Enhance DNS

EdgeCast Networks recently announced that they have joined the initiative with OpenDNS and Google (News - Alert). EdgeCast Networks is one of the world’s best and reliable content delivery network (CDN). Google and other DNS providers have vowed to speed up the internet by improving the current handling of DNS requests.

The internet architecture requires a robust DNS handling. DNS is similar to our ‘phone book’ which essentially maps the user friendly website URL’s to their IP addresses. Some sites are very slow to load due to the physical distance between the requester and the server. The performance can be improved if the request is served from a server nearer to the requestor.

The way internet works currently is for a delivery network to emphasize where the request is coming from and deliver the result from the closest location to the requestor. Since delivery networks only finds out the requesters ISP and accordingly they choose the nearest delivery server. This becomes problematic because the user might be thousands of miles away from the ISP’s server farm. This contentious issue is what needs to be talked to speed up the internet for the end user.

The solution that is proposed will take the end user’s IP address along with the request to the delivery server, which can assess the nearest server based on the IP address of the user and hence speed up the delivery. This method if implemented will improve the speed of the internet for all the users around the globe. This will be a boon for all those who work for a living using the internet. EdgeCast Networks have already implemented this new way for address mapping to deliver results closest to the actual user. This change will improve the capacity planning of the networks, and also improves their performance and security capabilities.

In a release, Alex Kazerani, EdgeCast Networks CEO said, “Improving internet performance is at the core of the EdgeCast mission. Incorporating these enhanced DNS standards is another step toward fulfilling our goal of making the web faster for everyone.”
