uProtect.it Provides Restrictions on Who Can View Comments, Photos on Facebook

There is a new application called uProtect.it that allows users to restrict who can see their content on Facebook (News - Alert). It protects comments or posts, photos and videos.

“By using uProtect.it, you can ensure that only your friends can read your comment or post, no matter where on Facebook you happen to post it; even Facebook can't ever see the actual comment,” according to information posted on uProtect.it’s website.

Reputation.com’s uProtect.it ensures that only people you want reading messages will be able to do so, the company explains. It even allows protection of part of a message. When you want part of a message open to everyone, and the rest protected, put the portion that is unprotected inside of two brackets [ ] and put a hash tag (#) in front of it.

Reputation.com was formerly known as ReputationDefender (News - Alert).

uProtect.it also allows for protection of photos. It can save a protected static image in a user’s album and allows for protected comments below the photo, the company said.

In addition, users can schedule posts on Facebook to expire at a designated time – an additional protection. Users can also employ Facebook's tagging feature with uProtect.it. The new options should be popular with Facebook users concerned about privacy.

The privacy protections offered by Facebook are “often difficult to use” and it is not “always clear who will or won’t see a supposedly protected item,” according to a report from the Daily Beast.

It’s not clear how Facebook will react to uProtect.it. The Daily Beast notes that Facebook has shut down apps it did not approve of, or those that conflict with its terms of service.

Because uProtect.it is free of charge, it was not clear how Reputation.com expects to make money from the app. But the awareness the application will generate about the paid suite of privacy services will lead to revenue, the Daily Beast explains.

In other Facebook news, TMCnet reported that Facebook came up with an app that makes personal information more accessible. Facebook suspended activity on the application earlier this month, says TMCnet. The application gives third-party programmers access to user’s information based on permissions, according to TMCnet.
