DNS - Microsoft Uses Numbers to Shoot Down Competitors

Microsoft (News - Alert) PR, Frank X Shaw, posted a blog that delivered powerful blows to its main rivals and competitors, blows powered by numbers and ending any misconceived perceptions that Microsoft is falling off. The blog features 12 sets of numbers that compare Microsoft primarily to Apple (News - Alert), Google, Linux and Salesforce.com, proving they still have the edge.

Shaw opens up the bashing with the number 150,000,000. This number represents, according to Shaw, the 'Number of Windows 7 licenses sold, making Windows 7 by far the fastest growing operating system in history.' This number alone shows the dominance and command that Microsoft continues to withhold in the computer operating front.

Shaw continues on his tear by comparing the projected sales of netbooks and iPads in 2010. The projected sales for netbooks, 58 million, are more than eight times that of the critically acclaimed iPad, 7.1 million. He follows up this number by showing that in 2009, 96 percent of netbooks were operated by Microsoft.
Later in the post, Shaw takes a shot at Linux, an old time rival of Microsoft, by presenting numbers of their decline of their server market share, despite a projection that it would increase through the years.

After bashing on Linux, Shaw posted a questionable set of numbers concerning the iPhone (News - Alert).

--8.8 million: Global iPhone sales in Q1 2010.
--21.5 million: Nokia (News - Alert) smartphone sales in Q1 2010.
--55 million: Total smartphone sales globally in Q1 2010.
--439 million: Projected global smartphone sales in 2014.

He does not address the numbers of smartphones that are powered by Microsoft by masking it with Nokia smartphone sales and overall sales to show that Apple isn't top dog in this field. However, this variable shows that Apple holds the reigns in this category in comparison to Microsoft.

Shaw then targets Microsoft's dominance in the email battle. Windows Live Hotmail users outnumber Gmail accounts by almost 200 million and outnumber Yahoo mail accounts by almost 100 million.

Shaw ends his packs one last punch with the most important number of all, net revenue. Microsoft's $14.5 billion net revenue in 2009 dwarfs that of Apple's $8.2 billion and Google's (News - Alert) $6.5 billion. This final blow shows that nothing speaks louder than numbers, and Microsoft seems to have the numbers on their side yet again.

Frank Shaw could not be immediately reached for comment.
