DNS - Firefox -- Now IBM's Browser of Choice

With IBM's (News - Alert) VP, Sutor talking about his company's choice of web browsers, it is now official---IBM has adopted Firefox as its default browser. And with this IBM decision, some 400,000 employees world wide will use this browser to surf the Internet. The decision came at a time when a number of browsers are vying for attention.

'All IBM employees will be asked to use it as their default browser. Firefox is enterprise-ready, and we're ready to adopt it for our enterprise,' Bob Sutor, vice president of open source and Linux at IBM's Software Group, said in a blog post on Thursday.

It will be worthwhile to mention here that recently Mozilla (News - Alert) informed the industry that the company's software is believed to be used by nearly 400 million people worldwide. IBM's nod to Firefox means additional boost for this open source web browser.

'Today we already have thousands of employees using it on Linux, Mac, and Windows laptops and desktops, but we're going to be adding thousands more users to the rolls,' Sutor said.

As a part of its switch to Firfox, IBM is going to load the software on all new computers. In addition of training its employees in its use, IBM is also going to encourage its vendors to adopt this Mozilla browser. IBM, which is increasingly into using cloud computing for its own IT infrastructure, seems to rely more on Firefox than any other competing browser currently available in the market.

Sutor's fondness for this new web browser becomes evident from the praises he chooses to shower on it.

'While other browsers have come and gone, Firefox is now the gold standard for what an open, secure, and standards-compliant browser should be. I think it was Firefox and its growth that reinvigorated the browser market as well as the web. That is, Firefox forced competitors to respond. Their software has gotten better and we have all benefited,' he commented in the blog.

In answer to the query why his company has chosen Firefox over other web browsers like Opera and Google's (News - Alert) Chrome that also span Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux,  Sutor said it is the liberty that Firefox allows that has attracted IBM to this Mozilla product.

'Firefox is open source, and its development schedule is managed by a development community not beholden to one commercial entity,' he said.

Sutor also voiced his hopes that the IBM selected browser would introduce more support features for HTML 5 standards.
