DNS - Can Apple and AT&T Handle the Rush of iPhone 4 Orders?

If Steve Jobs was worried about his failed attempt to demonstrate the iPhone (News - Alert) 4 at WWDC, the orders pouring in should put his fears at rest. According to a Silicon Valley Insider piece, both Apple and AT&T have sold out of their initial batches of the new device.

Apple (News - Alert) has listed the new shipping date for pre-orders as July 2 (or before) and those eager customers are posting delivery dates of July 6-8 on Twitter. The best part of this story for both Apple and AT&T (News - Alert) is that the device is still not for sale. The iPhone 4 is set to launch June 24 - will there be any left to offer those who haven't jumped in line already?

You have to remember, this isn't Apple's first time at bat. The company is VERY good at building anticipation for their latest device and ensuring they have enough on hand to satisfy all those wanting the latest and greatest. This isn't a case of the Christmas toy - it doesn't help drive up the sale price if Apple can't meet demand.

Industry players aren't worried that Apple - or AT&T for that matter - will drop the ball on available inventory. Besides, AT&T doesn't want to have to turn down those higher data plans on 2 year contracts. Will there be a problem with the predicted 2 million units shipped by opening weekend?

Don't count on it. Even with ordering problems already happening, it just builds the anticipation and given the customer satisfaction rates AT&T has been able to pull down lately (trailing other players by quite a bit), customers are willing to put up with a lot to get their hands on the latest iPhone.

Even the latest "hacker" reports aren't hurting AT&T in terms of their Apple connections. A hacker has reportedly gained access to e-mail addresses on the iPad devices. The apology was offered on Sunday; the invasion of privacy occurred six days earlier.

AT&T also recently announced it is ready to launch the Android-based HTC (News - Alert) Aria. According to an Information Week report, AT&T has released a video demonstrating the new device. With the pressure from Android (News - Alert) mounting, Apple has every motivation to stay the course.
