Verisign Enhances Verisign Managed DNS Cloud-Based Hosting Solution

Verisign, Inc. announced that it has enhanced its Verisign Managed DNS, a cloud-based hosting solution that improves the availability of Internet and network applications by offering complete DNS resolution for customers.

It was revealed that Verisign’s Managed DNS service is capable of offering full support for DNS Security Extensions or DNSSEC compliance features and Geo Location capabilities. These two enhancements make it easy for enterprises to enhance Internet communications, besides also the security and performance of Domain Name System (DNS) transactions.

Ben Petro, senior vice president of Verisign’s Network Intelligence and Availability business said in a release, “Verisign continues to deliver the most advanced features for network security, availability and performance across our entire services portfolio.”

“Leveraging our extensive expertise and leadership in DNS management and DNSSEC implementation, Verisign’s Managed DNS solution eases DNSSEC compliance, while also enabling greater performance for network applications through Geo Location,” Petro added.

The application of digital signatures to DNS data helps authenticate its origin and verify its integrity as it moves throughout the Internet. Also security extensions are especially designed to protect the DNS infrastructure from man-in-the-middle attacks that corrupt, or poison, DNS data. Using DNSSEC, administrators will be able to sign their data, producing digital signatures on the DNS data which is validated through a “chain of trust,” explained company sources.

Jennifer Pigg, vice president of Yankee Group’s (News - Alert) Anywhere Network research group said, “For DNSSEC to effectively safeguard the global DNS infrastructure, it is vital for Internet Service Providers, Web site operators and registrars to implement DNSSEC across the domains they manage.”

Pigg also said that investing in a DNS hosting solution will provide complete support for DNSSEC which will simplify DNS management and enable the timely implementation of DNSSEC for as many organizations as possible.

Verisign’s Managed DNS solution enables a domain’s DNS record to be digitally signed for any top-level domain (TLD) that supports DNSSEC including .com, .net, .edu, .gov, .us, and .org among others. Verisign simplifies DNSSEC management by signing all zone files in a customer’s account. This checks the status of DNSSEC keys ensuring their validity besides automatically publishing new keys after the existing ones expire.

The DNS solution also features enhanced Geo Location capabilities that will help customers to differentiate responses to DNS queries and optimize network performance. Using this feature Web site owners can customize responses for end-users based on their physical location or IP address. Geo Location can also be used to optimize network speed, functionality and reliability.

VeriSign (News - Alert) also announced the launch of Verisign Uptime Bundle, a new service bundle that combines protection from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks with Verisign’s Domain Name System (DNS) hosting, and threat intelligence service.
