DNS - Cisco Explains What Organizations Need to Consider When Migrating to IPv6

Cisco (News - Alert) recently presented a live online roundtable broadcast discussing the important factors that organizations need to consider when before shifting to the new IPv6 protocol. This is the new version of the Internet Protocol which is more secure and supports a greater number of Internet addresses.

With the number of Internet addresses supported by the current IPv4 protocol to less than 5 percent of the global computer population, introducing the new protocol was inevitable. The IPv6 protocol will also help the government agencies to improve their communication and reliability.

The Obama administration has advised all global governments to issue directive to agencies to upgrade their official websites and related services to the latest protocol. This will ensure that the agencies will continue to provide quality services to the citizens even though the underlying technology changes. The countries which have started taking steps in this regard include Japan, Spain, Malaysia, France, India and Australia.

Topics covered during the broadcast included:

--The necessity for IPv6 migration
--The impact of the US government when it issues a mandate to all agencies to upgrade their websites and services to support IPv6
--How can the organizations minimize disruptions to their existing systems with the introduction of the new technology
--How can the organizations prepare for the migration
--Major differences between IPv4 and IPv6 technology
--The cost of migration to the new technology
--Coexistence between IPv4 and IPv6 technologies

Speakers during the broadcast included:

--Ben Fathi who is the senior vice president of Network Software and Systems Technology Group, Cisco
--Alain Fiocco who is the senior director of Network Software and Systems Technology Group, Cisco
--Jennifer Geisler who is the director of Government and Security, Cisco
--Ric Chavez who is the senior manager of Global Government Solutions Group, Cisco
