DNS - .ORG's New 'Practice Safe DNS' Campaign to Counter Internet Abuses in More Efficient and Effective Manner

Domain hijacking in addition to phising, pharming, cache poisoning and DNS redirection are amongst the other internet abuses that have been posing great threat to cyberspace security. Recent spurt in the abuse of Domain Name Systems (DNS) was a matter of concern for the global IT community.

However, to counter this problem, .ORG has launched ‘practice Safe DNS’ campaign recently. Its new initiative is going to serve as a key resource for domain holders, registrars, web developers and IT professionals, and will impart knowledge about how they can emulate themselves as stakeholders in providing a safer and more secure Internet services. The Public Interest Registry, .ORG, which has been leading the pack of companies providing internet security solutions, is offering and implementing the best practices against internet abuse.

The campaign, which is set to start very soon, will pool in the expertise of internet heavyweights such as the "Father" of the Internet, Vint Cerf of Google (News - Alert), Steve Crocker of Shinkuro, Inc., Jim Galvin of Afilias, Dan Kaminsky of Recursion Ventures, Cricket Liu, VP of Architecture at Infoblox (News - Alert), and Ram Mohan of Afilias.

By going to the website, the visitors, through a social and educational hub, will be directed to these experts who will speak via video testimonials and blogs about the threats creeping in the Internet's infrastructure and will advise them on how to combat the apparent threats.

"Through our 'Practice Safe DNS' campaign, we're aiming to show how protocols like DNSSEC are evolutionary steps that lay a foundation for a more secure Internet, more secure applications, and more secure services," said Maarten Botterman, CEO at .ORG, in a statement. "If we can successfully educate the IT community and provide a forum to pose questions to some of today's biggest Internet experts, then we are one step closer to ensuring a safer Internet."

Steve Crocker, CEO of Shinkuro, Inc., added: "The first domain name may have been created 25 years ago, but the Internet is still in its infancy when it comes to security. By sharing our experiences, we hope to educate and disseminate the importance of securing the DNS and illustrate how each of us — whether we are registries, registrars or registrants — play a vital role in obtaining complete Internet security."

.ORG has been actively engaged in unearthing solutions for internet security for several years. Prior to the Practice Safe DNS Campaign, it became the first generic top-level domain to offer full DNSSEC deployment with the support of its registry service provider Afilias. The development was followed by .ORG’s announcement of the insertion of its DNSSEC key into the Internet root zone.
