DNS - Faulty Switch Software Causes Verizon Wireless Data Outage

Service has been restored to those Verizon Wireless customers who experienced data outages with their mobile Web and e-mail access early today. Bad switch software reportedly caused outage, according to news reports.

The outage impacted customers east of the Mississippi, causing a deterioration of service and lower wireless speeds, the Wall Street Journal reported. The problem was resolved by 8:15 a.m. Eastern Time, the report said.

“We had no national outage,” Thomas Pica of Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless told TMCnet.

The network outage did not affect voice services, nor did it impact every Verizon customer. Data access in New York, for example, continued to work Wednesday, TMCnet reported earlier today. In a Twitter update, the company said “PS – Voice service unaffected.”

The staff at TMC (News - Alert) has its share of network issues, including TMC CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert), who tweeted that the “service seems to be down around the country.” In his Tweet, Tehrani noted that there was a lot of buzz about the outage on Twitter.

With such outages, users typically flock to forums and Twitter to give updates, vent their frustration, or find useful information.
