DNS - Chase Customers Face Online Banking Disruption

While more and more companies are pushing to get customers online to conduct transactions, get support and make purchases, incidents where the website goes down or has prolonged errors can not only disrupt the business, but put relationships with online customers at risk.Online Banking is one sector that has gained popularity in recent years as more users look to the speed and convenience of online transactions.

A recent report by comScore (News - Alert) found that the number of customers visiting the top 10 online banking sites increased from approximately 40 million in 2006 to more than 58 million and that in any given quarter, nearly 60 percent of the total U.S. Internet population visited at least one of the top 20 financial institution sites.

But the possible effects of an online banking site going down has possible implications that are far more damaging than other sites, since the sector is still recovering from a recent wave of criticism and a persons personal information and finances are at risk.

According to a recent New York Times report, this fear came to light earlier this week when Chase customers were not able to access their accounts on the banks Website beginning Monday evening. While the problem was corrected by early Wednesday morning, many business and customer accounts were reportedly still having issues logging in late Wednesday afternoon.

The NYT reported that the bank plans to cover all late and overdraft fees resulting from the service disruption which, they said was the result of a, “third-party database company’s software error causing log-ins on the website to not be processed correctly.”

Protecting website operation and functionality is vital for companies, and banks in particular, looking to gain customer trust.
